REVIEW: Skyclad - Folkémon Nuclear Blast, 2000
9/10
Skyclad - Folkémon - cover art Germany´s one and only Nuclear Blast manages to produce one great record after the other and sometimes I suspect that half of my record collection consists of their releases. Well, anyway, Skyclad is really something out of the ordinary with their own style of heavy metal with British folk music influences like flutes, horns and other stuff that is not normally used in a metal band. Skyclad is not only a unique band but also one of the most talented in the business with great melodic music and this time also a little heavier than before with strong guitar rhythms and vocal lines. Everyone in the five men and one woman strong band plays more than one instrument except for the lead vocalist Martin Walkyrirer who takes care of the vocal melodies and lyrics. If you haven´t heard Skyclad before you have really missed out on one of the best metal bands and a breaker of new music ground that is remarkable to hear. The only thing I find a little sad about this album is that it starts off with some great tracks but then it seems to fade out towards the end with music that eventually turns a little plain. However, this is definitely among the best releases of the year and an album you would not want to miss out on! Guest appearances were made by Tirza Abb (vocals on Polkageist), Averre Graham (penny whistle and cor-anglais, whatever that is..?) and Fred Purser (lead solo). The album was conceived at Trinity Heights (Newcastle, UK; recording), Face Studio (Newcastle, UK; additional musical compilation) and Moles Studios (Bath, UK; mixing), produced by the band themselves assisted by Fred Purser, Dan Austin and Dave Maughan. The album was mastered by Tom Müller at TTN Mastering in Berlin.
