REVIEW: Skyfire - Timeless Departure Hammerheart Records, 2001
8.5/10
Skyfire - Timeless Departure - cover art From the Swedish Abyss Studios the famous Tägtgren brothers bring us one album after another of very high quality and this is their latest creation. Skyfire have departed on a journey through eternity with this debut album. If you only go by the vocals this is a death metal album but Skyfire have so much more to offer since they have incorporated more non-traditional elements in their music. Have you ever met a death metal band with two men standing by the keyboards? Skyfire do have a lot in common with Children Of Bodom but 1) they don´t have the same bombastic sound, 2) their growling doesn´t have the same depth and 3) the keyboards are not just used to enhance the guitars but also to create more complex classically inspired melodies. While the keyboard arrangements are extremely complex and often reminding of golden Rhapsody moments the more traditional instruments are perhaps a little less protruding. Sometimes it feels like the keyboards are supported by the guitars and drums and not the other way round. Nonetheless this is one of the best debut albums so far this year and it´s nice to see that there are still some Swedish bands who come up with a fresh new sound. Copycats are often becoming boring in the end but Skyfire is luckily not.
