REVIEW: Skyforger - Thunderforge Folter Records, 2003
8/10
Skyforger - Thunderforge - cover art Latvia is a country that maybe most of you don´t associate to any metal band, but Skyforger are here to unfold that beatiful tiny country placed at the shores of the Baltic Sea, which is their homeland. These guys have become one of the strongest acts of the scene when it comes to powerful folk metal, apart from being probably the best Latvian metal band ever. Their first album was rather leaned to black metal but subsequent albums have been deeply drenched in folk. “Latvian Riflemen” was a great album that combined with mastery pagan and heavy metal, and this “Thunderforge” is also worth the buy if you´re into that kind of music. I must say I still see the previous album "Latvian Riflemen" as their best LP, but anyway “Thunderforge” is quite powerful and heavy. The band has evolved to a perhaps heavier sound (through an excellent production), using melodies that make the album rather “classic heavy” in some moments. Folk instruments are still present, so no huge changes can be seen, certainly and luckily. Songs could be defined as a convincing mixture of heavy and pagan/black metal, with that characteristic pagan/folk touch that Skyforger usually puts on their recordings without losing the strength and wrath of pure, wild metal. This time the topic used in the lyrics has been the ancient mythology of their homeland and ancestors, and Peter´s broken, peculiar voice again sings in Latvian, which is, of course, very positive. Skyforger has been and is a band very solid in their beliefs and their pride of being Latvian breathes all along each one of their releases. I´d say I like this album a lot, and it has certainly several great tunes, as the opening pace of death “Kad Usins Jaj”, traditional arrangement “Migla, migla, rasa, rasa” or the mighty and pounding “Nakts debesu karakungs”. So you can´t miss this LP if you like the fury of metal music tainted with ancient folk tunes.
