REVIEW: Skylark - Wings Scarlet Records, 2004
7.5/10
Skylark - Wings - cover art The cover art of Wings depicts lush scenery, complete with rainbows, and a mythical flying beast. Nothing could be more appropriate – if there is one word to describe this album, it is “beautiful.” “Summer of 2001” features energetic power metal riffs and a catchy vocal line, while powerful keyboard parts play an important role in “Rainbow in the Dark” and “Last Ride.” However, other songs, like “Faded Fantasy” and “A Stupid Song” are more delicate. The acoustic guitars and keyboards really bring out the beauty that Skylark is capable of creating. The quieter songs also bring the vocals center stage. The male vocals dominate most of the songs, with the female vocals adding beauty and interest. They are less dramatic than those of other power metal bands like Dragonforce and Nightwish, but there is still strength behind both the male and female vocals. They are also quite pleasing to the ear. The extremely cheesy narration, however, is not so pleasing. It doesn’t show up much on this album, which is a good thing. Overall, Wings is recommended for power metal fans and those who appreciate the beauty in melody and subtlety. After taking a listen, you’ll have plenty of reasons to believe in Skylark.
