REVIEW: Skymning - Artificial Supernova Blackend Records, 2002
6/10
Skymning - Artificial Supernova - cover art The Swedish Skymning was one of several bands signed to Invasion Records but unlike others they did not dissolve when the label went bankrupt in late 1999 or early 2000. Instead they wrote new material and signed a new deal with Blackend Records (a division of Plastic Head). Skymning formed in 1996 and released their debut album in 1999 and this is the long awaited follow-up to that album which was called "Stormchoirs". This is a band set in steady development and they have changed their musical direction several times in their still rather short career. At the very beginning they started playing melodic death metal but their first album was a mix of power and black metal. Today they have incorporated a lot of samples and electronics in their music and this album is a very industrialized black / death metal release. The last song of the album is in fact a completely instrumental industrial noise track which I don't like very much though. The band now has a new vocalist as well called Tyborn who is a very good clean melodic death metal growler. This is a fairly enjoyable release if you are into experimental death metal but the riffing is not that exciting unfortunately. I would nevertheless love to see them take this concept to the next level.
