REVIEW: Skyward - Skyward Thundering Records, 2005
6/10
Skyward - Skyward - cover art Skyward is a Finnish heavy metal band who debuts with an eponymous album for the French record company Thundering Records. The band biography on the back of the promo copy makes a point of telling me that they have stayed true to their own visions and ignored the current trends when writing music for this album. I wonder when record labels will start being honest instead of praising their latest releases lavishly? The truth here is that Skyward wants to be Nightwish. The female vocalist Sanna Åström does indeed possess qualities worthy of this comparison although she doesn't have the same wide range and depth as Tarja did and fails to explore other domains where she could have made something personal out of her voice. Part of the problem is that her band mates do not provide her with the songs that could possibly have led her to greener pastures. Skyward is still a reasonably young band though, having formed in the year 2000, and hopefully they will mature significantly within a few years time. I wonder if their previous vocalist Miss K. was the same who almost became the front figure of Stratovarius during their "Metallica taken to extremes" episode? Oh, well, Skyward have made a decent first effort and I'm sure it will comfort a few broken children who still mourn the loss of Tarja.
