REVIEW: Slave To The System - Slave To The System Spitfire Records, 2006
6.5/10
Slave To The System - Slave To The System - cover art Slave to the System play a brand of Hard Rock not entirely out of place in today's world, though the band is clearly stocked with scene veterans. To wit, the band is comprised of two former Brother Cane members Damon Johnson (vocals/guitar) and Roman Glick (bass), Queensrÿche drummer Scott Rockenfeld, ex-Queensrÿche axeman Kelly Gray, and relative newbie Scott Heard (guitar/vocals). On the press release accompanying this release one of the band members states "everybody just wanted to rock out and start something new and unique...." I'd have to say SttS necessarily fail in that regard because the press release goes on to namecheck both Velvet Revolver and Audioslave, bands heavily influential to Slave to the System. At times quasi-Hair Metal, sometimes almost Grunge, often too heavy on the ballads, this bands still came to rock with some Blues creeping in here and there. Though the lyrics are often too simplistic, perhaps a symptom of being composed in a 3-week period, this is not a major fault. Nü-Metallica is recalled once or twice, as are Creed and Godsmack in general, so if this ball of wax sounds like your cup of tea, to mix a few metaphors, check 'em out soon. Not as sleazy as Beautiful Creatures, nor as storied/talented as Audioslave or Velvet Revolver, Slave to the System still rock. If this came out 5 or 10 years ago, it'd likely be massively successful. As it stands now, they are a bit behind the curve.
