REVIEW: Slayer - Diabolus In Musica American Recordings, 1998
9.5/10
Slayer - Diabolus In Musica - cover art There is something special about listening to a Slayer album - some kind of atmosphere that no other band on this planet has been able to re-create ever since they started out in the early 80's. It was evident even when they released their debut album "Show No Mercy" in 1983 that they would become one of the biggest and most important metal bands in history and they have not disappointed anyone. Even though I still prefer their first albums I think this is a great album. With "Diabolus In Musica" they wanted to try something new and they did not fail. The band does not want to play the fast and furious riffs from their early days. Instead they have become heavier and darker. In fact I think this is the blackest and most sinister sounding Slayer album so far. The riffs are mighty and ominous and Araya's vocals have never been scarier and more powerful than they are here. Without his charismatic and raging vocals there would have been something missing on this album but on the other hand it would have sounded rather boring hearing him screaming without the massive guitar power and diabolic drumming backing up his voice. Every member of Slayer makes his contribution to the music and when they are at their best they beat most of the competition on the metal scene today even though it has been close to twenty years since they started their career. Yet another wonderful album from one of a few who are still going strong.
