REVIEW: Slayer - Show No Mercy Metal Blade Records, 1983
10/10
Slayer - Show No Mercy - cover art Slayer is perhaps the only extreme metal band who has ever enjoyed real commercial success. This statement is of course not an undisputed one and it all comes down to what you define as "extreme" and what you mean by "commercial success". Nonetheless they are one of the most important bands in the history of metal and hundreds and yet hundreds of bands have been influenced by their unique mix of technique, crushing riffs and raw intensity, all topped off with the anguished screams of Tom Araya. Slayer was formed the same year as Metallica and when James Hetfield & Co released their debut album "Kill 'Em All" in 1983, the diabolic thrashers were also ready to unleash their first aural assault on an unsuspecting world. At this time no one had ever heard anything like this and Slayer quickly gathered a loyal fan base. Slayer has always been a band surrounded by great controversy but whatever your opinion is of them they are one of the best metal bands that has ever existed. Taking the dirty energetic sound from the old punk scene and mixing it with the power of heavy metal they created something unique that has lasted until this day. When listening through their debut album for the umpteenth time I have no problem understanding why these young Los Angeles natives reached the top of the mountain almost immediately. No need to say another word, this is one of the strongest debut releases ever and a classic album in the history of metal.
