I have always been very skeptical when it comes to best of albums and live records because often they are only released to either make money or keep the fans in a good spirit when a band goes on a break or doesn’t want to hit the studios right away.
My attitude wasn’t any different with Slipknot’s live album but I was positively surprised. The first CD starts off with a guy announcing that the band will not be performing which of course causes an angry crowd to scream furiously. The anger turns into excitement only seconds later when Slipknot open the show with “the blister exists”. Well, the CD doesn’t offer any new songs but the selection of 24 tracks couldn’t be better. The band chose a nice mix of the usual suspects such as “duality”, “the heretic anthem”, “spit it out” and “people=shit” as well as some rare pieces like “eeyore” (for those who don’t know that song: it’s a hidden track on the self-titled album), “skin ticket” and their intensive 15 minute epic “Iowa” which they cut down to about six minutes and a half. That’s a minus in my opinion because I don’t like it when bands “slaughter” their songs just so they have a better length for live shows. Either play them in the original version or simply let it be! Another thing I didn’t like about the album is that Corey Taylor’s vocals don’t sound as clear compared to the studio albums. I’ve always liked the fact that even though he’s singing and screaming very aggressively you can still understand the lyrics but maybe I’m just being over-demanding. What I’ve been wondering though is when they are going to play one of their two ballads live for the first time. I would think a live album was a decent occasion but no. Nevertheless, this live album is a must for every Slipknot fan because it carries that special live atmosphere right into your living room and revives the memories of past gigs.
