When I first listened to The Lord Weird Slough Feg's latest album Hardworlder, I wasn't sure what to think. It's very folky and high energy metal, with stories of old mythological happenings. It opens with a frantic and fast paced scale-ish track that's about a minute long. As I look back into my notes and pick my brain a bit, my first impression was Iron Maiden meets Judas Priest meets a Celtic beast in the woods, and they all jam. Although that doesn't hold true throughout the whole album, it's the closest I could get. They're not your average metal or rock band -- everything's very mathematical and straight from music theory, which I like, and these tracks are rather catchy, so watch out because you'll be singing them for a few days.
As far as the music goes, Slough Feg use great guitar riffs and solos. Everything's very melodic and fits in perfectly. These guys from Pennsylvania know what they're doing when it comes to songwriting. Each song has a different feel, whether you like to headbang, dance, or the good ol' fashioned fist pump high in the sky, you can do all of those to this album. Lyrically, most songs tell a story and contain the average rhyming scheme that you'd see in poetry and all that. Some of the lyrics are a bit too cliche or too easily rhymed, as if they only used them for convenience. The beginning and end of the album are the heavier sections, with the middle being a little softer. A lot of the songs have an 80's feel to it, but with a modern twist that you don't hear too often.
Hardworlder definitely touches many genres and emotions that live within rock and metal music. Though this really isnt my preferred style of music, I enjoyed this album and I'm glad I've stumbled upon The Lord Weird Slough Feg. (If you're wondering where their name came from, they got it from a celtic/folklore comic Slaine.) If you're the type of person that just loves every aspect of rock music, whether it be alternative, heavy metal, hard rock, jam bands, etc., I would definitely recommend this album.
