REVIEW: Small - Small Self-financed, 2004
5/10
Small - Small - cover art This self-titled recording is the second demo from Small, a metalcore outfit created in the outskirts of Paris in the year 2000. This is a difficult type of music to master as you will find easily find yourselves scaring off either hardcore or metal fans in one way or another. On top of this there is little room for experimenting if you want to reach the typical metalcore fans which means that you have to be in the upper league if you want to make it. What makes Small different from most other bands in the genre then? To be honest, not a whole lot. They do have a slightly more aggressive sound that sometimes borders to death metal but most of the time they offer predictable standard metalcore riffs and the usual alternation between deathcore growls and cleaner singing. The vocalist alternates between the two styles of singing fairly well but his clean voice does not make much of an impression on me. An ok demo that might be of interest to metalcore fans who think you have already heard everything else and don't mind looking back again.
