REVIEW: Sodom - Lords Of Depravity Part I Steamhammer Records, 2005
9/10
Sodom - Lords Of Depravity Part I - cover art It is almost incredible that 100% of the Teutonic thrash triad is still around and presenting fine music that is able to stand on its own even in the 21st century. Inbetween studio albums (and apparently due to the label's not so generous studio budget plans) Sodom mainman Tom Angelripper has been working hard on a very ambitious and comprehensive DVD collection that will span the entire career of the band. The first part has been released and covers the early years, from 1982 through to 1995. When I said ambitious I was definitely not joking around. Even though this is only the first half of "Lords Of Depravity" it is comprised of two DVDs with more than five hours of material. The first disc includes a three hour long history lesson where we are taken on a journey back in time to the early 80s when Sodom was created. This disc also includes interviews and comments from most of the former band members as well as a few other celebrated musicians such as Kreator's Mille, Tankard's Gerre and Mr. Hard rock himself - Motörhead Lemmy. This is a very intrigueing story that will be able to give everyone some insight into one of the most important periods in the history of extreme metal.

The second disc is packed with two hours of live material, gathered from various shows and (mostly) festivals such as Wacken Open Air, Bang Your Head and With Full Force. There are also a few video clips. What strikes me in particular when listening to these songs is the amazing sound quality. Of course a lot of editing has taken place but it has still not depleted the show uptakes from all of the live atmosphere. The visual aspects of the entire DVD have been taken well care of as well and I can easily and honestly say that this is one of the best DVDs I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. Sodom have been around for close to 25 years and is a monumental foundation in the history of metal. It was about time that something like this was released. Now let's wait for the, probably equally ambitious, second part of this comprehensive collection and let's hope that more historical bands are given the chance to illustrate their illustrious history in such a magnificent manner. Triple Thrash Treat!
