REVIEW: Soilent Green - Sewn Mouth Secrets Relapse, 1998
7.5/10
Soilent Green - Sewn Mouth Secrets - cover art Soilent Green is the first band from Louisiana I stumbled upon in many years of metal experiences, if I'm not wrong. The discovery has been worth all this time, certainly. We're before an album which flows easily and portraying manifold expressions of music, ranging from sludge-doom slow and groovy riffs to frenzied passages. There is no rest throughout the album, except for some ambient/intro parts.

Sewn Mouth Secrets consists of a relentless attack on the listener through a battery of riffs, speed and blast beats (superb drum work by the way) featured under the flag of aggression and metal, of course. The tempo changes are continuous, no peace anywhere. It may sometimes bore the listener due to the excessive changes but take it or leave it, as usual. The technical performance is flawless in my humble opinion, with the sound being quite good and natural. I'm especially fond of the drum sound. No clinical, artificial drums here.

What about the vocals? They're quite similar to Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down, etc.) sometimes (incidentally, mentioned in the credits), while others are punch-in-the-face hardcore-esque diatribes, quite close to grindcore yellings. Not to forget the atypical artwork consisting or art nouveau pictures, quite bizarre but providing the personal touch of this band! Prepare your mind for the listening, if you want to savour these blokes' music. It will be worth it, certainly.
