REVIEW: Soilwork - A Predators Portrait Nuclear Blast, 2001
8/10
Soilwork - A Predators Portrait - cover art After having released their first two albums on the French Listenable Records the Swedes of Soilwork have now signed with a major label, namely Nuclear Blast from Germany. This third album is a big step forward both for the band and for their music. For the first time the vocalist Björn Strid is now using clean vocals as well as the traditional death metal growling and the mixture of the two brings about a very nice atmosphere a little similar to that of Gardenian. Vast vocal variety, nice guitar solos and some of the most technical melodic death metal there is around is what you will hear from Soilwork and this release. Soilwork is also using keyboards to enhance their music even more which is quite unusual for a death metal band. Sweden seems to be a never-ending source of melodic death metal but what may surprise some people is the high quality of a lot of these bands. Soilwork is definitely to be placed in the elite of this league and they are also aggressive like few others. Perhaps Soilwork is not unique nor ground-breaking but they sure now how to produce great melodic death/thrash metal. The title track is one of the best death metal songs ever made in my opinion and the fact that Rob Halford (Judas Priest, Halford) is a big fan of the band should say something about their music. The album was recorded at the well-known Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden.
