REVIEW: Solar Dawn - Equinoctium Mighty Music, 2002
7.5/10
Solar Dawn - Equinoctium - cover art Solar Dawn is one of the newest members of the Swedish horde of melodic death metal bands. When bands like At The Gates and Dark Tranquillity started this trend in Swedish metal no-one knew how big they would become in the future. Extremely melodic music with death growls has made its way throughout the world but it is still in Sweden and neighbouring countries that the scene is strongest. New bands evolve all the time but Solar Dawn has been around for five years now and is one of the most promising new ones. Solar Dawn is more brutal and aggressive than the In Flames and Dark Tranquillity that we know today and the music is also a little thrashier, perhaps more similar to what At The Gates used to do. Even though I wouldn't hesitate in labelling this album as a melodic death metal release there are influences from most metal subgenres to be found on this disc. These Swedes do without a doubt have the ability to move further in their careers and I wouldn't be surprised if we will see them on the Nuclear Blast label in another five years time. The album was recorded at the Abyss together with Tommy Tägtgren and features drumming from Jocke Pettersson (Thy Primordial, Dawn etc.). The artwork was done by Chrille Andersson from the Swedish power metal band Supreme Majesty. A fine release if you're into melodic death metal!
