REVIEW: Solefald - Pills Against The Ageless Ills Century Media, 2001
8/10
Solefald - Pills Against The Ageless Ills - cover art “Pills Against The Ageless Ills” could be categorised as one of the bravest attempts of doing a “symphonic black metal concept work”. Well, the story behind the lyrics is quite interesting, not in vain Cornelius and his lectures on philosophy are leaving a significant trace on several Solefald song lyrics in each album... Instead of diatribes about der Übermensch or Hegel´s thoughts, there´s a down-to-Earth view of the subject, and two characters called Philosopher Fuck and Pornographer Cain and their events and feelings is what the lyrics are about. Sounds pretty weird and indeed, it is! The story may look stupid to some eyes but at least the will of being original is something Solefald have had since the very beginning of their career. The music accompanying the words is less complex than in previous albums, and a rather straight forward sensation wipes away the varied patterns of “Neonism”. Therefore here you can behold friendly song structures and choruses and bridges easily distinguishable at a first listening. Blasting opening “Hyperhuman” boasts out a couple of riffs incredibly intertwined with keyboards to conform a melodic monster difficult to beat. That euphoric revelry the Solefald sound achieves sometimes is here perfectly represented. Again the Cradle Of Filth keyboard focus appears on this recording, surrendering the music to melody successfully while guitars don´t lose the trace of the sound at all and keep on being the main role. Both instruments are more united and solid than ever.

In a certain way this is the most accessible Solefald album without plenty of odd parts and unexpected changes: modern black metal with mature keyboard parts with that sempiternal prog touch the way Lazare loves. “Pills Against The Ageless Ills” is very worked on lyrically, with a myriad of written jewels and sentences that try to impact the listener in his face instead of twist his mind with cheap romantic metaphores. Modern poetry courtesy of the unique Cornelius Jakhelln. As far as the musical side is concerned, next to highlights as the aforementioned first track or “Hate Yourself” or “Fuck Talks”, some riffs are not telling the listener anything really exciting. The last two tracks are for example a bit weak for what one could expect from this duo. Anyway, this album is made of a collection of high quality songs quite entertaining and original.
