REVIEW: Sone - Scratching The Surface Casket Music, 2003
6/10
Sone - Scratching The Surface - cover art Casket Music and Copro Records keep on spitting out record after record with native metalcore bands and Sone is the latest one of them. Formed in the winter of 2001 the band is very young and having released a mini album this early in their career they are now well on their way. I must say that I got a better impression from this band than most others in the genre. This is mainly because of the fact that their vocalist Austin McMaster actually knows how to sing. His aggressive singing is very powerful but when using his clean voice it sounds pretty good as well. This is where most of the competition fails but Sone have found a very charismatic and versatile front man. Another thing that promises better things to come for this young band is that they already sound very tight and a mature sound saturates this debut recording from beginning to end. I doubt that I will ever listen to this album again but Sone is nonetheless a band that you should look out for if you are into metallic hardcore or the more aggressive side of the modern nu-metal scene. They have come a long way already and if they keep on working hard they could go even further. I personally despise the general attitude and opinions within the hardcore / aggrometal scene but the music of Sone is at least partially interesting and enjoyable.
