Wow! After a few amazing death metal releases by the Belgian bands ‘Aborted’, ‘In-Quest’ and ‘Leng Tch’E’ a breath of fresh air has clearly blown through the metal scene these last couple of months. As if this wasn’t enough the band ‘Sons Of Jonathas’, consisting of former ‘Channel Zero’ bass player ‘Xavier Carion’, have just released a monster of a trash album that has old school written all over it. That’s right! Think of old Slayer, Grip Inc., Testament, Kreator, Exodus and together with a little extra touch you’ll get ‘Sons Of Jonathas’. It’s clear that these guys are looking back to the past for musical inspiration, yearning for a time of supper fast riffs and the roots for a fascination of evil, which as a result got integrated into metal music. The artwork together with the lyrics is therefore also very appropriate for this topic and talks of death, war and hell. ‘The Death Dealer is dark, fast, filled with chaotic guitar solos and it certainly doesn’t feel forced or over the top at all. It sounds very natural and honest coming from someone who hasn’t been very active as a band member for almost a decade. Because of his experience as a producer Xavier took the task of engineering and producing SOJ debute album on himself while the final mixing and mastering was done in the Antfarm, by Tue Madsen!
Now, just in case anyone would think that all the above mentioned bands are getting such good reviews by myself simply because I am indeed from the same country, you’re wrong! For years I have been extremely jealous of the Swedish and Finnish metal scenes, countries with a smaller population then Belgium, but who’ve been delivering so many amazing bands. The year 2005 has brought a great boost to this small country (heavy music wise) and I guess it’s either coincidence or just hard work finally getting paid off. In any case the music is out there thus proof and it’s waiting to be discovered. Listen and you will obey. Enjoy!
