REVIEW: Soul Less Divine - Dishonourable Suffering Self-financed, 2003
3.5/10
Soul Less Divine - Dishonourable Suffering - cover art First off, the packaging on this self-released CD is really solid. The insert and all the packaging is impressive, aside from the heavily pixelated band logo at the center of the insert. Kudos to the marketing team. Onto the music. The album opens with a bit of Gregorian chant over some clanking of unknown origin. This gives way to music that is not terrible, although the production clearly is. The liner notes afford this clue: "...recorded by digital 4 track over 2 days in May 2003." 'Nuff said. The vocals, sounding like a hybrid of Glen Benton and Frank Mullen, plainly dominate. Guitars, the riffing style of which approximates demo quality Suffocation Lite, are next in the mix. The drums and bass battle for third position with the battery being more audible than the semi-transparent four-stringer. There are some strong moments here in that an interesting, though not new, riff or two appear throughout these 9 songs. The drumming sounds mechanical, though not mechanically precise (i.e., tempo is not maintained – particularly near the end of song 3). There seems to be an excessive amount of clean toned guitar passages and a few too many isolated bass licks (that are still buried in the mix). You have to know when to say when. Speaking of which, the song titles are derivative of Incantation’s material through their overly long, anti-Christian stance. Overall this sounds more like a demo than a proper album but that is largely okay. This band has a long way to go to making a killer album, but this is definitely a decent start. Hopefully they can hone their craft and come back with a sound quality more appropriate to their wants and needs. Not bad but clearly not necessary, even at only five Canadian dollars. I bet their live show is light years better.
