REVIEW: Soulstealer - Soulstealer Ledo Takas, 2008
4/10
Soulstealer - Soulstealer - cover art This Lithuanian band breaks onto the scene with their eponymous album and frankly, I'm far from impressed. This is the first power metal band I've ever listened to from the Ledo Takas catalog, and this signing hasn't been the smartest move in the label's history.... There is no trace of originality at all here, starting from the very band name. The music suffers from the same lack of freshness.

Soulstealer probably won't remind you of a single band, but sundry acts watered down under the interpretation of these guys. A cheaper version of Yngwie Malmsteen's band could be a reference in many passages. Cheesy keyboards sometimes spoil the result and don't altogether fit in the whole.

I can't avoid the fact the singer reminds me of a Japanese vocalist in a fashionable Dragon-Ball soundtrack or anything similar - you get the point - and it's annoying, believe me, unless you're fond of the Nippon way of life and manga posters pave the walls on your room.... Yes, I've made it clear, the pitch of the singer is irritating, to say the least. The high screams are evidence this guy should sit down and ponder some things in his career. "The Reaper" is an outstanding shameful moment; the question in this point turns out to be a song about death with happy-scrappy tunes? We're before a failed attempt at being epic, but childish lyrics don't help a lot in that endeavour... By the way, the band's choice to sing in Lithuanian and English is quite amateurish...

Personality missing? Poor English fluency? Waiting for the sales to see what language will be used on the next album? In the final words, this is their debut album and that must be taken into account. The weak production contributes strongly to the soft effect caused by this album on the listener, but the average mix is not responsible of this band's inability to make something interesting. All in all it's a pity since technically speaking the band features correct gestures and skills. An oblivion-fodder act...
