REVIEW: Sourvein - Emerald Vulture This Dark Reign Recordings, 2005
8/10
Sourvein - Emerald Vulture - cover art Spawned in Cape Fear, Sludge/Doom veterans Sourvein have been in the underbelly of the scene since late 1992. T-roy and crew have punished the ears of fans, listeners, onlookers, passersby, and even the unsuspecting who have stumbled into their path of sonic annihilation without the benefit (hindrance?) of many studio recordings. Thanks to the Lord, Southern Lord, that is, 2003 saw the wider unfurling of the band's mighty opus, Will to Mangle, and Sourvein hit the map in a major way. Fast forward to late 2005 and the band has unleashed Emerald Vulture, the first of a reported trio of EPs. This relatively short slab of gritty and dirge ready Doom was written and recorded in Hampton, Virginia in 5 days with Vince Burke of Beaten Back to Pure (who also drums on this slab) at the helm and this sucker is as ominous as it is slow moving. The crushing riffs creep along, laying waste to brain cells and ear drums alike while T-roy's anguished vocals punish not unlike a Today is the Day record played at a snail's pace. Hurricane Katrina destroyed the Crescent City, pushing back the release date, and then while T-roy was visiting family in Nor'Ca'lina, another hurricane leveled that state. Setbacks disguised as natural disasters aside, Sourvein is back with a vengeance. Check 'em out now if you never have before. You've been warned. [Note: the final ~10 minutes of this EP is primarily a feedback drenched batch of hallucinatory madness and I'm still groggy from the dose.]
