REVIEW: Spellgate - Exodus Self-financed, 2004
7.5/10
Spellgate - Exodus - cover art The explosion of the fantasy genre has not only been seen on bookshelves all over the world but also on the movies and, last but not least, in music. Bands like Blind Guardian have risen side by side with Tolkien but there are many others who are not as well known. One of these bands who deserve more attention is the Canadian Spellgate. Those who do not fancy power metal much do not need to worry because this is something completely different. In fact, this is not metal at all. Instead it's more in the gothic / industrial vein but slightly more ambient and upbeat. The music is centered around symphonic keyboard arrangements from the male member Darynlard, a few select techno beats, one or two industrial pounding rhythms and on top of all this the beautiful female vocals of front lady Dosashlia. Exodus is not exactly the most innovative album title chosen but the music luckily speaks for itself. This full-length album doesn't quite hold up as well as their debut demo from a couple of years back which I was very impressed by. It is indeed some breathtakingly fresh music though and I am sure most people will be able to enjoy this album if they only have an open mind and are able to listen to something else than metal. Definitely recommended whether you're a fantasy fan or not. If not the lyrics may seem a bit silly and meaningless but the music is still there to please your mind.
