REVIEW: Spellgate - Legends Of Ardigm (EP) Self-financed, 2002
8/10
Spellgate - Legends Of Ardigm (EP) - cover art As you may be aware of Tolkien is far from the only one who has been writing fantasy tales in the 20th century and the whole fantasy scene has virtually exploded during the last ten or so years. This has also given inspiration to a lot of metal bands like Blind Guardian, Battlelore, Bal-Sagoth and plenty of others. Although Spellgate may not be categorized as metal by everyone I can not find any other fitting label to describe their music. This is one of the most intrigueing and unique albums I have had the chance to listen to ever since I began writing for Tartarean Desire close to two years ago. Spellgate consists of two members. Darynlard composes all the music using advanced computer sequencing and a synthesizer. Dosashlia came from a background in classical music and electronic sounds and became interested in joining the band. Now she handles the female vocals with an amazing result. Her voice is so serene and clear that it should be able to shine even in the brightest of lights. This album sounds very much like a movie soundtrack and despite the fact that all the music is electronic the song structures are very similar to those of metal with both power and speed present. They may need to work on the music a little though and accentuate the vocals even more to take the project to the next level. A wonderful creative and innovative release with a close to perfect production, beautiful vocals and the potential to reach the top.
