REVIEW: Spetälsk - Spetälsk Arte De Occulta, 2003
6.5/10
Spetälsk - Spetälsk - cover art Spetälsk is a two man black metal project from Norrköping, Sweden, that started in the year 2000. It took the band two years before they decided to record this demo tape which only contain two tracks. It opens with the fast and violent "Sol Syns Svartna" which is the stronger of the two. It has a solid and efficient riff which pushes it forward and brings about a very intense atmosphere. Unfortunately the drums do not sound very good in this nor the second and last track. The production is very low-fi but I guess that's the point as they are looking for that raw and primal sound that made early Darkthrone and Burzum releases the cult items they have become today. In my opinion they have succeeded a lot better than many other bands in their genre. The final track "Reign Of Hate" does not only lack the Swedish lyrics of the opening hymn but it also lacks something to distinguish it from the huge pile of similar sounding songs spewn out of the black abyss inhabited by all these Darkthrone clones. If you are a big fan of bands such as Burzum, Darkthrone and Von you will probably have some interest in Spetälsk as well but unless they manage to produce more than two songs during the next couple of years I am afraid they will fall out of most people's memory rather soon.
