REVIEW: Spiders & Snakes - Hollywood Ghosts Sansei Records, 2005
5/10
Spiders & Snakes - Hollywood Ghosts - cover art Spiders & Snake rose from the ashes of ex-London guitarist Lizzie Greys Ultrapop Project and throughout different line-up changes they have now been reduced to a duo with Grey (guitars, bass, vocals) and Timothy "Jay" Yasui (keyboards, drums, vocals). A guesting Angelo Moore from Fishbone can also be heard on saxophone on this recording. This is a band who do not follow the trends but do their thing by paying homage to the big 70s Hollywood rock bands. The result is ok but far from impressive. Not one of these twelve songs stick out in any direction, good or bad, which makes their new album seem rather pale. The song writing is not very exciting and the vocals never really grabs the listener and sometimes they even sound silly as in "The Siamese Twins".

If you are a big fan of music videos then you should at least be happy about the bonus DVD that comes with this album as it includes no less than 15 promotional videos of varying quality. There are also four interviews of which you could mention one that features porn star Jasmin St. Claire, now this is very American and glam rock, right? "Hollywood Ghosts" sounds too thin and insipid to become a successful retro release and I think the duo should think about finding a few additional musicians to work with because they need to add some spice to this dish in some way. Right now it doesn't taste very much at all although it does have its moments.
