REVIEW: Spinal Cord - Remedy Crash Music Inc., 2004
7.5/10
Spinal Cord - Remedy - cover art Spinal Cord is a brand new name on the Polish death metal scene but the members of the band are no newcomers, having previous affiliations with established bands such as Devilyn, Vader, Hell-Born and Dies Irae. This is of course not enough to produce interesting music but being an experienced musician naturally helps both in song writing and when actually performing the music. Spinal Cord began in 1999 and they recorded a demo tape and did some national shows in support of bands like Behemoth and Vader before signing a deal with Empire Records in early 2003 for the release of this debut album. Crash Music has taken on the task of distributing it worldwide from now on which will surely help the band. It is not easy for Polish death metal bands today, competing against a myriad of acts who have popped up in the shadows of the worldwide success of Vader, but Spinal Cord are suitably armed to embrace the task with love and warmth... Oh, sorry, I meant hate and cold-hearted violence of course.

Just after hearing a few minutes of this album it is easy to tell that the band members are skilled musicians as it is very fast, intense and tight. The general atmosphere is very dark and sinister, grabbing Immolation as a reference in lack of something better. While "Remedy" is certainly a death metal album more than anything else, on more than one occasion there are flirts towards a thrashier sound where Bay area influences shine through. The guitar work is very rich in textures and Spinal Cord show us the importance of creativity and variation when writing music. The growling of frontman Barney is exemplary - mighty, deep and oppressive. This is how brutal death metal vocals should sound. The absence of "Hammer-Smashed Face" lyrics also makes "Remedy" a welcome addition to the library of death metal. A very solid album that should please most fans of the genre. The title track is the most impressive song in my opinion but the quality of all twelve tracks is very even and the bar has been raised high.
