REVIEW: Splattered Mermaids - Creation Of Wounds Inner Voice Records, 2006
6.5/10
Splattered Mermaids - Creation Of Wounds - cover art Deathgrind with a twist is what Splattered mermaids all about. Allegedly a brutal death metal/death-grind outfit that follows the genre's outlines, it offers – other than the necessities – also a lucid and dynamic sonic output for its vision, by using undertones of melody and the ever changing, erratic drum work, with its schizophrenic multi-rhythms and virtuosity. Not an over abundance of blast beats employed, but used sporadically and excellently executed, what makes this recording, as a whole, a fun-to-listen-to experience for anyone who still digs this style but whom is more often than not disillusioned from the notion that anything interesting will ever emerge from this cesspool of deathgrind mire…

Splattered mermaids offers something a tad more refreshing than your usual brutal death metal fix (hence the score), and even though the main vocals are rather generic, there's a second screamer who adds a bit of lunacy and extra dimension to this recording. If I had to chose what would be my dose of brutal death metal for the weekend, I'd chose this recording over so many other faceless albums scattered around…
