REVIEW: Squealer - Under The Cross Painful Lust / AFM, 2002
7.5/10
Squealer - Under The Cross - cover art The German band Squealer are back with their third full-length album "Under The Cross" which continues the melodic trend of the previous two albums but also adds a harder touch which is very welcome. What is most important is that they haven't given up the melodic sound which has always been their trademark. It is very hard to categorize Squealer - there are lots of power metal choruses, nice guitar melodies but also plenty of thrash metal influences and also a touch of modern Fear Factory metal, most notably on the Johnny Wakelin cover ("In Zaire"). This band has managed to pull the best elements from several different metal styles and created a crushing and powerful yet melodic sound of their own which I give them credit for. However, some of the tracks of this album sound a little too similar all the way through. Luckily these are exceptions and my overall impression of this album is that anyone into heavy metal should be able to enjoy these tracks. The only thing I don't like is that it sometimes gets a little monotonous, mainly because of the almost constant and neverending pounding drums. Outstanding tracks: "Painful Lust", "Thinking Allowed!".
