REVIEW: Star One - Space Metal Inside Out Music, 2002
9.5/10
Star One - Space Metal - cover art He's back....Yes indeed, The King is still alive and kicking and you know I'm not talking about Elvis! This is the new project of Arjen Lucassen who's spoiling us once again with an outstanding album. The artwork is simply awesome and the cover gets you right away in the space travelling mood. Based on science fiction movies, he invites us to guest which ones he was inspired by. This album has a definite Deep Purple sound due to a crafty use of hammond organ, great guitar riffs and of course, key / guitar duos. As a matter of fact, each song is blessed with this magic organ sound. But that's not all because you can also enjoy plenty of different types of keyboard throughout this recording. "Lift-Off" is the spacy intro that fuels the mighty spaceship. You'll then be invited to "Set Your Controls" with its exciting mood, machine gun drumming, great riffs, lots of solos, outstanding vocals, guitar / hammond duel, harpsichord, walls of keyboards and the list goes on and on... What a breathtaking ride! Now that I took my breath, I can go on to one of my favorite numbers which happens to be the next one "High Moon". What a Deeply Purplish sounding piece! Great hammond sounds included of course. The beat, melody, guitar, everything is simply fantastic and almost too good to be true. But hey, it's The King of Modern Time Prog we're talking about here so this stuff is not a dream but a reality! This is only the beginning three songs and they are almost worth the cost of the album but don't be afraid, the others have some good suprises waiting for you too like acoustic and ambient passages, vocal effects, choirs and the list goes on. Mr. Lucassen is playing most of the instruments from guitars, bass, hammond, mellotron, synths but he also has some guest musicians for synth solos, guitars and drums. As usual, a wealth of talented and varied singers joined in the musical adventure. In short, this album has a lot of variety to offer to satisfy your hearing pleasure. If you're into Deep Purple, keyboard, Prog music and Ayreon, you can't afford not having this jewel in your collection.
