Starkweather’s music is often labelled as metalcore, but that is just taking the easy way out since this music isn’t going to be placed in a single genre. The band plays a mix of hardcore, technical metal, death metal with some psychedelic elements. The full-length “Croatoan” is the bands third album, the preceding “Into The Wire” was released in 1995 so Starkweather has had a decade to prepare for this release. The band does not stick to the traditional verse-chorus-verse concept witch sometimes are a good thing. But sometimes the tracks just feel like a total mess and since they are so long (the average song is about seven minutes) they tend to blend into one another. The vocals range from low pitched growls to hardcore yells and clean vocal and all of the different vocal styles sounds awful. If it hadn’t been for the bad vocals this might have been a good release, now it’s just annoying. That many years to prepare and this is the result? Someone really should put the singer out of his misery.
