REVIEW: Static-X - Machine Warner Bros Records, 2001
7.5/10
Static-X - Machine - cover art Static-X is a band whose worldwide success I have found it hard to understand. Of course they are a pretty good band after all but there are so many better metal bands out there and I can't see why Warner Bros would sign Static-X instead of one of them. Anyway, Static-X is very much centered around the vocalist and he sometimes actually sounds pretty good but most of the time he is just screaming. The first time you listen to this album it sounds pretty powerful and impressive but it quickly grows boring on you and you realize that there is not much to it than the powerful vocals, a few nice riffs and monotonous drumming. I am now being very, perhaps unnecessary, harsh on this release because it is actually enjoyable and the band has a distinct unique sound, it's just that when a major label like Warner Bros decide to sign a metal band you kind of expect more of them than this. I guess they are more interested in a profitable look than interesting music even when it comes to metal. Sad but true it is. Another thing, why does so many new bands these days have to have at least one song where they try to sound like Marilyn Manson (here it is the track "Cold")? It only sounds stupid when you try to copy someone like him... Anyway, this is not a bad album at all and if you like techno-industrial aggressive nu-metal you will probably not be disappointed if you decide on purchasing a copy of it.
