Stefan Elmgren
is a man whose name is very well known to all fans of modern heavy / power
metal. At the age of 13 he picked up the guitar for the first time, at the age
of 18 he went to study at The Musicians Institute in Hollywood and today he is
part of the most successful Swedish metal band during the late 90's namely
Hammerfall. After several acclaimed releases he felt like creating something
on his own outside of Hammerfall and thus the band Full Strike was born. The
other members are vocalist Niclas Johnsson (ex-Lost Horizon), bass player
Chris Goldsmith an drummer Björn Fryklund (Freak Kitchen), all of whom
have a past with bands in the Yngwie Malmsteen sphere. The debut album from
the band is a very impressive one but who would have expected anything else?
The album starts off with two wonderful heavy metal classics that set the
standard at a rock high all the way from the start. I was very glad to hear
that Stefan had decided to move away from the Hammerfall sound and create
something on his own that was set free from his main band. I don't think
Hammerfall is a bad band at all but they are not one of my favorites. Full
Strike on the other hand is more deeply rooted in classic heavy metal and hard
rock á la Rainbow, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden but with a modern touch similar to
the latest Gamma Ray album. This album is heavy for sure but it is not built
only on speed. There is everything from fast tracks to mid-paced to ballads
and there is not a single bad song even though the ones most similar to
Hammerfall tend to get a little monotonous at times. Shortly a wonderful debut
album. Stand-out tracks: "End Of Time", "Enlighten Me", "Master Of My
Soul".
