REVIEW: Steve Hackett - Metamorpheus Camino Records, 2005
7/10
Steve Hackett - Metamorpheus - cover art This is the latest album from former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett. However, those of you who are familiar with the sound of Phil Collins band should leave aside every consideration about comparisons. This album doesn´t sound to Genesis, nevermind whether you compare it to their most progressive albums (the older ones) or the poppy ones from the 80´s. “Metamorpheus” is classical music, I´d say, classical music based on orchestra and guitar. Strangely enough, this album has instanly reminded me of Yngwie Malmsteen´s orchestral album, in spite of the great distance between both artists: a classical guitar leading the sound with an orchestra as a flamboyant background. Of course here there are no lightning guitar parts à la Yngwie; the album is mostly mellow and tranquil, meditative and nice, intimate and naked of ornaments in a certain way, quite ambiental.

The orchestra hasn´t meant a flippant horde of arrangements, certainly, and it has been used to support the atmospheres created by the accoustic guitar of Mr. Hackett. There is no vocals on this album, as you have probably wondered, so if you ask me about this album to be sort of a soundtrack I´d say you are right. In the interview Steve kindly answered for Tartarean Desire, he told us interesting things about motion picture scores and classical music, so you can delve there for more information about his vision of the topic. In addition to the music itself, Steve has chosen the Greek myth of Morpheus and Euridice as the concept behind the notes, and the election has been quite good. Nothing more to say: if you like film soundtracks, cute music and tasteful accoustic guitars without extravaganzas, you´ll probably enjoy this album.
