Stormlord is one of the oldest Italian metal bands who are still around today and unlike most of their countrymen they have dedicated their skills to the craft known as black metal. "The Gorgon Cult" is dark, it is epic and symphonic and it more than a little both tastes and smells like Cradle Of Filth. If that is of your liking then you will have a lot to be happy about here. Unfortunately Stormlord doesn't appeal to me as much as Cradle Of Filth did in the past before they signed with Sony (note that I did not start to dislike them because they signed with Sony but they have never been the same since then). Instrumentally I do not have much to complain about but it feels as if the songs do not lead anywhere. They often start off with a nice, slow and mystical intro, then we have the standard black metal guitar riffs and frantic drums and some keyboards on top of it. It isn't bad but it feels incomplete and stereotypical. I do however appreciate the good taste they show by including a cover version of Iron Maiden's "Moonchild". Maybe a little bit controversial for a black metal band but don't we all love Iron Maiden?
