REVIEW: Stormrider - First Battle Won New Aeon Media, 2004
7/10
Stormrider - First Battle Won - cover art Stormrider is one of several Swedish underground talents who have been given the chance to put their material on a compact disc by the newly founded Karmageddon Media imprint New Aeon Media. Formed in 1999 this band mixes violent black metal with aggressive death metal riffs. "First Battle Won" is a rather typically Swedish sounding album and you can trace a little bit of old-school Stockholm death metal as well as a few Dissection melody nods in the mix, albeit slightly less dynamic. Thanks to an Abyss production courtesy of the Tommy brother it comes with a massive sound wall which helps in making the album a very intense and pleasant listening experience. I am particularly fond of the vocalist who is going by the "mysterious" (oh, my...) alias YX. He manages to perform both black and death vocals with equally satisfying results and his raspy black vocals almost sound inhuman. Far from original, Stormrider have nonetheless created a competent addition to an already very strong Swedish black / death metal scene and it does not take much thought to realize that a lot of blood, sweat and tears has been shed in the making of this debut album. It was originally meant to be released by a small Swedish label called Destructive Records but they could apparently not finish their commitments but now the beast is finally unleashed. Dark, intense, brutal and neck-breaking metal made for the strong. Beware of cliché lyrics though.
