REVIEW: Strangulation - Withering Existence Self-financed, 2003
6.5/10
Strangulation - Withering Existence - cover art "Sweden" and "death metal" are combinations of words that often appear in the same sentence. Strangulation is a new act from Karlskoga that was given birth to in 2001 as another local act called Butchery was laid to rest. Inspired by bands like Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Slayer and Morbid Angel they set out to create brutal and aggressive death metal in order to conquer the world. Since then the band have undergone several line-up changes and today consists of Jonathan O.G. on vocals, Juha Helttunen on guitars, John Carlsson on bass and Tobias Israelsson behind the drums. On their first demo "Carnage In Heaven" from 2002 Dennis from Spawn Of Possession and Visceral Bleeding handled the vocals but now they have managed to secure a good growler of their own. Jonathan O.G. has a voice which is very close to Chris Barnes, the original Cannibal Corpse and current Six Feet Under growler. Unfortunately his vocals are sometimes buried a little too deep in the mix. The guitarist Juha Helttunen is doing a good job himself, creating diverse riffing which is absolutely essential if you wish to make memorable death metal. These four tracks run by a little bit too quick in my opinion and even though these guys are very tight and friends with their instruments there is something missing to give their music an edge compared to other bands of their genre. As a demo it shows promise for the future and it is worth keeping the name Strangulation on your mind if brutal old school death metal is what you crave for.
