REVIEW: Stratovarius - Visions Noise Records, 1997
8.5/10
Stratovarius - Visions - cover art There are few power metal bands in the world as varied as the Finnish Stratovarius and that is probably why they have become one of the leading acts within this genre. Without every song sounding exactly the same they wander through technical guitar solos, slow majestic ballads, heavy riffing and beautiful melodies as if it was the easiest thing in the world. With the prominent seer Nostradamus in mind "Visions" is a journey into the minds of the ban as they interpret the world. Musically Stratovarius has never impressed me extremely much although they do have their golden moments. The most important component of the band is the amazing Timo Kotipelto. His vocals are simply beautiful and helps a great deal to make Stratovarius one of the most spiritual and emotional power metal bands in the world. Perhaps this album is a little too slow at times and there is unfortunately also an instrumental song called "Holy Light" included. Having a vocalists that sounds like James Labrie, Geoff Tate and Fabio Lione at the same time puts Stratovarius on a higher level than many other bands and the success of the band is no coincidence. Beautiful tracks like "The Kiss Of Judas", "Legions" and "The Abyss Of Your Eyes" make this album highly memorable and definitely worth buying. The album was produced by Timo Tolkki and engineered and mixed by Mikko Karmila at Finnvox Studios, Helsinki.
