REVIEW: Striborg - Embittered Darkness Displeased Records, 2006
3/10
Striborg - Embittered Darkness - cover art To start off I must say that I very much wanted to like this album as I have heard many good things about Striborg in black metal circles. Being a relative fan of Xasthur and some of the more classic Darkthrone releases I thought that I would give it a try. Unfortunately I just could not get into Embittered Darkness / Isle de Morts at all, while it is bleak and primitive it is perhaps too much so. It is 16 tracks of repetitive extremely low production black metal complete with synth elements which add a truly depressing tinge to the music. This is perhaps the only high point about the album for me; the depressing and dreary mood produced through the music is ominous. When I started listening to the album I was simply bored and agitated at the poor production and frankly the small amount of musical talent portrayed on the album. But towards the end I began to notice the atmosphere of the music, it sounded like an otherworldly soundtrack to a terrible nightmare and through all of my criticism I simply have to respect anybody who can produce such ambiance. Despite this one element, however, I can hardly recommend this album to anyone but devoted Striborg fans as there are a myriad of superior black metal releases.
