REVIEW: Subaudition - The Scope Auerbach Tonträger, 2006
7/10
Subaudition - The Scope - cover art The promotional devices around these newcomers quoted comparisons between them and Tenhi. As a matter of fact, Subaudition have not many things in common with Tenhi, being their Finnish origin one of the few common traits. The music itself clearly states those resemblances are not quite relevant, though some ears could presume some links. So forget to find a Tenhi copycat, clone or acolyte –fortunately for musical scene´s sake. Indeed, the first seconds of “The Scope” reminded me of UFO´s “Doctor Doctor” intro... The rest of the album follows the tendency; it´s a cavalcade of sounds riding on mellow prog fields rather than pastoral / dark folk tunes, so that thousands of bands could come to mind when listening to this album. Camel, Genesis, Pink Floyd, etc., depending on each listener and his degree of imagination. Flutes, accoustic guitars and synths are the foundations of the sound, crowned by vocals which whisper and emerge from the depths of the heart to draw dour verses. The hammond organ provides the characteristic 70´s hazy mood (e.g. in “No Angel”) sometimes so the focus of the keys is not the typically employed in ambient releases -rhythm-like, background role-. The overall mood is tranquil, melancholic and desolate, ruling the land the slow tempos and meditative paces. The band succeeds in building a convincing atmosphere and the sensations breathen through the music are often beautiful. Subaudition has still a long way to become groundbreaking artists, but this is an acceptable start. The style must be worked on until reaching a niche of their own; “The scope” has tiny jewels here and there, though the results are far from impressive. After several listens I´ve been unable to get especially hooked by any element of the album. Anyway, these Finns have a serious potential for the future and they will keep on working hard.
