REVIEW: Subway To Sally - Engelskrieger Metal Blade Records, 2003
7/10
Subway To Sally - Engelskrieger - cover art As the western world is becoming more superficial for every day that passes some people become more and more pathetic in their futile attempts to fight age and changes. Money, fame, sex and looks is everything to some people. However, these ideals are moving further down the society than you might think. The punk subcommunity of Europe has been transformed from thrashy clothing and spikes to the pvc and chains of the growing gothic community. The people who are supposed to care least about looks are in the end those who care the most. Of course everyone wants to look good, visual perfection appeal to every thinking individual, but as always some people become obsessed and take it too far. Enough said about that, my point was simply to point out that people who think that they are making their own decisions and follow their own paths are often doing the complete opposite. Trends are not only apparent in the "mainstream" society but also in the "underground", two concepts which are slowly fusing together. The same thing happens in music. When a band comes up with something fresh that no-one has heard before there will be hundreds of followers who try to ride on the wave of success. Subway To Sally is a German band who have become huge in Germany during the past couple of years and have toured heavily. The reason why they have not reached that far in other parts of the world is probably mostly because of their German lyrics. Musically they follow pretty much in the footsteps of Rammstein with heavy industrial power chords and raspy German vocals. This will probably be either a shock or a relief for you as they have left almost all the medieval / folk music influences behind them for this release. There have come a large amount of folk music influenced metal bands lately from the German speaking countries and perhaps Subway To Sally felt that it was time to do something else. They became heavier but unfortunately I'm afraid that they will now become a second lighter version of Rammstein to most people. It is still a good, heavy album, just not comparable to the earlier releases from the band.
