REVIEW: Suicide City - Not My Year Self-financed, 2005
6/10
Suicide City - Not My Year - cover art Lukewarm off the heels of my interview with Biohazard's Billy Graziadei I was hooked up with a few releases courtesy of My Rockstar Killed Yours PR, which is helmed by none other than Mrs. Billy-Hazard herself, Karin Graziadei. Among these was her husband's current band and primary focus, Suicide City. In addition to Billy on guitar and vocals, the band includes ex-Kittie Jennifer Arroyo on bass and vocals, lead vocalist Karl Bernholtz also of Groovenic, and is rounded out by guitarist A.J. Marchetta, and drummer Dan Lamagna. Countless pieces of almost blind praise that don't say much in terms of what SC sounds like abound at CDBaby.com -- where you can buy this EP. This is promising material that defies description in terms of genre stratification. There's definitely an Emo/Screamo vibe, a Hardcore sensibility, an Alt-Rock thing, some melancholic madness a la Tool, and a whole lot more, really. The band invokes The Misfits as much as Biohazard and even System of a Down (the last one especially in terms of the lead throat). Lesser known bands Drill and Dub War are also recalled. If you consider SC's first tour was with genre-benders/blenders Mindless Self Indulgence and aren't afraid of a band lightly dusted by NYHC with some pseudo Punk tendencies, check out Suicide City. More is to come.
