REVIEW: Suidakra - Emprise To Avalon Century Media, 2002
8.5/10
Suidakra - Emprise To Avalon - cover art Century Media don't usually sign underground bands these days but this time they have successfully picked up Suidakra from the German Last Episode Productions, a label that released the band's first three official albums. Their new album "Emprise To Avalon" is a concept album based on the old legends of King Arthur, Excalibur, Camelot and the magic of Avalon (someone come to think of Grave Digger...?). While Suidakra still are firmly rooted in traditional black / death metal they have incorporated lots of atmospheric and symphonic passages, clean majestic vocals and folky tunes. Actually they sound a little like a mix of melodic black metal, a less bombastic Blind Guardian and Skyclad. The vocals are well performed and there is really not much to complain about with this release. The only thing that I wish for when they sit down to write material for their next album is that they continue to work on the folk melodies. This band has been around since 1994 and today they are in my opinion one of the most interesting bands on the German metal scene. A wonderful album with wonderful melodies. Something that worries me a little though is that the band leader cites Limp Bizkit as one of his favorite bands but considering that the drummer is a Elvis fan you never know :-).
