REVIEW: Suidakra - Signs For The Fallen Century Media, 2003
7.5/10
Suidakra - Signs For The Fallen - cover art Suidakra follows up their successful 2002 Century Media debut "Emprise To Avalon" with their sixth full-length album so far. "Signs For The Fallen" is just as melodic as its predecessor and the early In Flames period influences are obvious. The melodies and guitar sound is quite similar to "The Jester Race" but the production is a lot more powerful and modern. Suidakra sounds more modern overall on this release since they have taken on a more aggressive and intense edge, moving slightly away from their folk / viking metal past and closer towards the new wave of death / thrash metal á la Soilwork. I don't think this was a wise choice though. "Signs For The Fallen" is still a good album but it feels as if Suidakra have lost some of what made them Suidakra. Their previous release was more original and they really had something of their own. Perhaps they have been listening too much to the label or producers telling them what is popular in the metal world at the moment. Wonderful musicianship and quite a lot of nice melodies but too much of a modern history lesson to be one of a kind. Recommended to fans of In Flames, Soilwork, Thyrfing or melodic extreme metal in general. Stand-out tracks: "Revenant".
