Summer Dying is a new rising act from
Lansing, Michigan, that formed in mid 2001 in the ashes of another band called
Mind Pollution and did their first live appearance in front of 200+ metal fans
at the 2001 Milwaukee Metalfest. Since then they have opened up for bands like
In Flames, Iced Earth, Lacuna Coil, Moonspell, The Haunted, Cannibal Corpse
and Dimmu Borgir. They have also been on a two week long tour together with
Bestiary in June 2002. Needless to say this is a band who have gained a strong
local following and I must say that they do deserve it. This is their second
self-financed full-length album and it presents a band influenced by many
different genres but what stands out the most is their very Swedish sound, at
times very similar to what In Flames used to sound like pre-Whoracle. There
are also some minor black metal influences, mainly in the vocals. The vocals
are varied and range from clean choruses to death growls and black screeches.
The clean vocals are perhaps not the best I've ever heard but they are still
a nice contrast to the rougher ones. As you may already have guessed this is a
very melodic album with both mid-paced to fast distorted riffing and slower
atmospheric sections, a few with acoustic guitars such as the short
introduction to the album. There are influences from both black and death
metal but also from modern heavy rock music like Linkin Park and P.O.D. This
is not a bad release and a few songs are actually very nice but in the end it
gets a little old and it feels like they are lacking a strong identity of
their own. If you liked what In Flames used to do and don't want a copycat I
suggest that you at least check out this promising young American band.

Sleep", "My Last Goodbye".
