Fans of Summoning have had to wait patiently for five years (not counting the 2003 EP "Lost Tales) for the new full-length album from the Austrian band. Once upon a time firmly rooted in the country's rich and flourishing black metal scene, they have developed their own unique sound, blending epic bombastic soundscapes with medieval minimalism into a sound track-like atmosphere that has yet to be imitated successfully by any other band. Increasingly complex with each subsequent album, it almost seems as if perfection is surpassed each and every time but myself being harder to please for every new album I hear goes pretty much hand in hand. At an early stage in the band's career they suffered somewhat from the immature song writing of a young band like so many others but the Summoning of today is very coherent and there is a continuous flow of elements in each individual song. This makes "Oath Bound" sound very diverse, dynamic and organic despite the articifial nature of many of the featured instruments and sounds. If tales of orchs and Mordor don't put you off then the epic grandeur of Summoning will keep you spellbound for more than an hour while envisioning the battles in the lands of Tolkien. It has now come to a point when the band almost appear as pretentious but who cares; they are the one and only. May the dark forces be with them forever.
