REVIEW: Sun Descends - Kanun-Law Self-financed, 2004
7/10
Sun Descends - Kanun-Law - cover art "Kanun-Law" is the second studio effort by Sun Descends and it basically still revolves somewhere around the thrash and nu-metal genres as their previously released "Tide In The Affairs Of Men". Armed with traditional ideas, but with a modern concept, they play very aggressive, raw and well written music. The vocalist Mem V. Stein [ex-Exumer] offers a bit of originality in the way he performs these songs, but the truth is that his style is not too attractive, nor is his voice too brilliant in many of the passages - it is very powerful all over though, the only problem for me is that he doesn't add much change to his technique, so we run into the same kind of melodies in all of the songs, and, as I've already said before, he isn't really capable of giving each song "personality".

The title track of the CD, "Kanun", is supposed to be the most exciting song on the record, and the entire material is supposed to be conceptually based on the vocalist's Turkish heritage, but I really don't understand why the band didn't sink a bit deeper into this fountain of inspiration, and maybe bring something more exotic into this genre of rock.

The guitars are very strong, the drums and bass all fit in nicely, and the vocals give the extreme rough sound a bit more edge. "Kanun-Law" (and Sun Descends) could appeal to all who like aggressive, raw, powerful thrash metal with influences from nu-metal and metal-core.

The band kindly asked us to mention that their CD is available for 9$ on their site - they don't have a record label to release their demo as they did in 2002 for their previous CD, so I think it's a small favour we can do.
