REVIEW: Supreme Majesty - Elements Of Creation Massacre Records, 2005
7.5/10
Supreme Majesty - Elements Of Creation - cover art Now that Hammerfall seems to have passed their glory days and Dream Evil already have become a one album wonder (yes, I know they had a lucky mainstream hit with "The Book Of Heavy Metal") there is a need for someone to assume the lead role among Swedish power metal bands. Supreme Majesty have always been working hard in the shadows, looking for the big break to win over the hearts of every power metal fan in the world.

Several things have changed since I last heard the band with their "Tales Of A Tragic Kingdom" album and all for the better. The guitar sound is heavier and thicker, the album is better produced and the vocalist Joakim Olsson has improved both his voice and singing style. The vocals do at times remind me quite a lot of Dream Evil's extraordinary debut album but musicwise they lean in several directions and I notice similarities to not only Dream Evil but also the non-folk aspect of Falconer and a nod towards the German school.

The keyboard plays an important role on a few occasions but Supreme Majesty are careful not to overuse this controversial instrument. Above all, "Elements Of Creation" is a very guitar driven album from a band whose members appear to be highly skilled instrumentalists but also deserves a high grade in the classes of song writing and vocal performance. "Soul Seeker", "Dance Of The Elements" and "My Revenge" are all songs that easily stick to the mind of the listener.

I never answered the question implied in my opening statement in this review, does Supreme Majesty have what it takes to assume pole position in the Swedish power metal scene? Not quite yet unfortunately. There are several bands struggling but no evident winner can be announced at this time. "Elements Of Creation" is nonetheless a modern and powerful album that I recommend to Dream Evil fans in particular. If you are searching for innovation it is moderately exciting though.
