REVIEW: Supreme Majesty - Tales Of A Tragic Kingdom Massacre Records, 2001
7/10
Supreme Majesty - Tales Of A Tragic Kingdom - cover art The debut MCD from the Swedish power metal band Supreme Majesty was so well received that it caught the eye of German Massacre Records who decided to sign the band for their first full-length release. Even though their former label is based in the same town where I live I have to admit that I haven't heard the MCD yet. Massacre has decided to call their way of playing "epic melodic metal" which is a popular marketing trick these days to get rid of the worn-out power metal label. This is however power metal with high-pitched passionate vocals and soaring guitar solos but these Swedes are good at what they do which might not come as a surprise to anyone. Even though these guys are skilled musicians and the band is fronted by a good singer there is something missing in order to make the album really special. With some additional years' experience Supreme Majesty could perhaps become one of the leading power metal bands but right now they have to fight to get to the top although they are still worth looking into if you are a fan of the genre. Massacre seems to have problems finding new interesting acts (or perhaps the problem is signing them) and ever since Theatre Of Tragedy left their label I haven't been overwhelmed by any of their bands. This is however a more than decent album and when vocals and music click like on "Let It Go" and "Keeper Of The Dead", Supreme Majesty is a great band. Another moment of bliss is the massive intro riff on "Queen Of Egypt". If you enjoy power metal you will not be disappointed by this one.
