REVIEW: Surrender Of Divinity - Oriental Hell Rhythmics Psychic Scream, 2000
7/10
Surrender Of Divinity - Oriental Hell Rhythmics - cover art Surrender Of Divinity is a black metal band from Thailand, formed in early 1996. After recording a demo tape and going on a mini-tour through Malaysia and Singapore they signed a two album deal with the Malaysian label Psychic Scream and here we have the first result from this evil covenant. Their style of playing is very much influenced by Norwegian and Swedish black metal bands like Darkthrone, Mayhem, Marduk and Immortal with both slower, more melodic sections as well as more raw and fast ones. One thing for sure is that they do their work very well and they are actually even more intense and interesting than several of their Nordic colleagues. The guitarwork is really great but I think the drumming needs to be improved and enhanced a lot more. It feels like the drums have been left in the background and it sounds a bit weird. Lyrically this is a violent satanic assault against Christianity and all it represents as you might imagine. The extreme metal scene in South East Asia is still rather young and it will probably leave the most extreme parts behind in perhaps five years time from now. Raw and brutal black metal is not really my favorite genre these days since it easily gets tiresome but Surrender Of Divinity have (de)created a nice dynamic piece that will hopefully please their Scandinavian heroes.
